Physiotherapy is more than a profession. It is not about money or career. It is thanks to the people, the feedback and friendliness I am able to experience when I help. Going to bed in the evening, knowing that you have helped people to recover – at whatever level – is the most rewarding feeling, a person can receive.
Since I was 5 years old Judo has been a great part of my life. Through this sport I was able develop many qualities and characteristics. Diligence, self-control, cooperation, honor and respect, motivation, punctuality, going to your limits, sweat and blood, to be subordinated, and much more. It is such a complex and overarching sport. I operate every day with fun and joy in the pursuit of strength, victory and happiness.
The journey is the reward, but one must also have the courage to go this way, having to encounter many obstacles. You must just go. That is the meaning I understand from the well-known Confucius quotation. On the bike I am able to see the world through different eyes. It gets me from A to B, and only I myself am responsible for my own by muscle power. A great feeling!
I’m Simon Yacoub and I was born on the 9th of June1989 in Leipzig. I have been standing on the mat since the age of five years. What was only fun at the beginning began to become the center of my life with every success. I had the chance to go to the elite school of sport “Sport Gymansium” in Leipzig since grade 5, from which I graduated 2009. With daily training sessions of up to four hours I set myself a clear goal in my mind..
I was one of the best fighters of my weight class in regional and central German tournaments.
Since the U15 I was a permanent member of the national selection in Saxony and was chosen for the national team when I was 16. That was the real, enormous start to my sporting career.
To this day, I fight in the first Bundesliga for the Judo Club Leipzig (JCL). After the intense sport years until 2010 I decided that a professional foundation was also essential. Therefore I started an apprenticeship as a physiotherapist in 2010 and finished 2013. Since then I have been working in the profession, but still strive to study medicine in the near future.
A pneumothorax in November 2013 and the recommendation to refrain from competitive sports have inspired me to give everything again. An unexpectedly rapid and proper healing process laid the foundation for my project “MY WAY TO RIO”.
However, my sporting pause made it impossible for me to qualify for Germany and thus brought me thus back to my family roots. That is also why I own a Palestinian passport in adiition to a German one.
In July 2014 I received the consent from Palestine that I can participate in the qualifications for the country of my father. In August 2014 in Chelyabinsk (Russia) I was able to compete for this country for the first time.
For me the road to Rio is not only a sporting challenge. It is also important to me
to show that war is not the answer and differences can be discharged in sporting fair fights. The most important aspect for me is to always be respectful to the opponent and finish the competition with a fair and friendly handshake on the mat – no matter how the fight ended.
I want to be clearly distanced from political opinions and backgrounds and see my participation
for the qualifications solely as a sporting support for the country that shaped my family.
Even today, my roots in Lebanon are deeply fixed and familiar feeling across borders is very important to me.
I am ready to fight.
